What is a VIN and where do I find it?

The Vehicle Identification Number is a unique 17-character code assigned at the factory. It is stamped on the dashboard at the base of the windshield, printed on the driver-side door-jamb sticker, and written on the title, registration and insurance documents. Copy it exactly — VINs are case-insensitive but every character matters.

Why does the decoder not show my car's model or trim?

Because a VIN does not carry it in any readable form. Characters 4 to 8 hold body, engine and restraint codes, but each manufacturer defines its own scheme and does not publish it. We would have to guess, and a guess presented as a fact about your specific car is worse than leaving the field blank.

Why do VINs never contain I, O or Q?

They were deliberately excluded from the VIN alphabet because they are too easily confused with the digits 1 and 0 when a number is stamped, photographed or read aloud. If your number appears to contain one of them, you have almost certainly misread a 1 or a 0.

My VIN failed the check-digit test — is it fake?

Not necessarily. Re-read it first: a 0/O or 1/I mix-up accounts for most failures. If the transcription is definitely right, remember that the check digit is mandatory only for North American VINs, so plenty of legitimate European and Asian numbers do not satisfy it.

Is the VIN decoder really free, and are there limits?

Yes, and no limits. Decoding is arithmetic on the number you typed — no external lookup happens, so there is nothing for us to meter. Only the paid vehicle history report involves retrieving actual records.

What is the difference between decoding a VIN and a vehicle history report?

Decoding reads how the car left the factory. A history report covers what happened afterwards — owners, title brands, accidents, odometer readings and a dated record timeline — and that information exists only in records held by reporting agencies, so it has to be retrieved rather than calculated.

A VIN is not a random string — it is a structured 17-character code defined by ISO 3779, and most of it can be read without asking anyone. This decoder does exactly that, in your browser session and at no cost: it takes the number, works out the manufacturer from the first three characters, the model year from the tenth, the country of assembly from the first, and verifies the ninth character against a checksum of the other sixteen. Nothing is looked up, nothing is stored, and there is no limit on how many VINs you run.

The check digit is the part most people have never heard of and the part that saves the most time. Characters one through eight and ten through seventeen are fed through a fixed weighting table; the result has to equal the ninth character. If it does not, the number in front of you is almost certainly mistyped — a capital O read as a zero, a one read as an I — and you have found that out before ordering anything or calling a seller. One caveat we would rather state than hide: only North American VINs are legally required to carry a correct check digit, so a genuine European or Asian VIN can fail this test and still be real.

We are also deliberate about what this tool refuses to claim. Characters four through eight describe the body, engine and restraint systems, but each manufacturer encodes that section privately and there is no public universal table. A decoder that confidently prints "CR-V EX-L AWD" from those five characters is guessing, and a guess about someone's car is worse than a blank field. So we show the manufacturer, the year, the assembly country and the structure of the number itself — and for everything that happened after the car left the factory, we point you at records rather than inventing them.
